6 1/2 Magic Hours (1958)

Welcome to the golden age of air travel where uniformed sky-hostesses are single and pretty, where you can smoke and drink and tourist class had full-service dinners, and trans-Atlantic flights defined the jet-set. For a brief decade between the end of the Korean War (1953) until the assassination of President Kennedy (1964), American culture was at it’s peak. Idlewilde Airport was a city of Modern designs including the circular Pan-Am Terminal with its cantilevered roof and TWA’s visionary gull-wing taking flight.

Come aboard the Boing 707 “Jet Clippah” with a wing-span longer the the Wright Brothers’ first flight. Fly to London in 6 1/2 hours. Arrive in Paris with more leisure time! So chic, So modern. Have hours-dourves in the cocktail lounge and then a dinner of lobster tail and carved roast. Relax in “livingroom comfort” with air-conditioning and colored mood lighting. Getting there IS half the fun!

Design for Dreaming (1956)

A woman dreams she gets an invitation from a mysterious man (dressed like Tuxedo Mask from Sailor Moon) to attend MOTORAMA, General Motors’ traveling roadshow of all things modern. Future cars with rocket styling. Future kitchens with a dome oven and rotating refridgerator. Architecture straight out of The Jetsons. Did I mention this is a musical? After sitting in the show cars she dances a latin solo on a futuristic stage, then Tuxedo Mask returns to whisk her into tomorrow in his gold rocket car, the 1956 Firebird designed by Harley Earl! Scenes of a future metropolis are glimpsed as they reach the end of the runway…. * Sigh.* A perfect film.

Design for Dreaming is a must-see and a free download from the Prellinger Archive.

1939 World’s Fair “posing show”, a burlesque attraction featuring partially dressed women under the guise of art; here presented as Living Magazine Covers. Jack Sharedan was a famous umpire in the early days of baseball, but I’ve no idea if it’s the same person.

Living Magazine Covers can be seen as an amature film on the Prellinger Archive.
