Wild Wild Planet (1965)
Criminali della galassia, I

best line: “Watch out for those gadgets on their chests!” – Commander Halstead while wrestling with an alien woman

It’s go go action, when aliens disguised as fashion models start kidnapping people for a mad mad scientist, so he can conduct inhumane experiments and merge himself with the perfect woman! Augh! Yes, it’s so bad it’s great. Spacemen fight with karate-chopping vixens, rockets spew fireworks, and aircars dangle on strings. The budget is so low the miniature buildings are re-used in the next scene as furniture and mod set decor.

The plot? Italians don’t need a stinkin’ plot — just a couple of futuristic cars and a lot of hair pieces! The “perfect” woman gets drunk and spews anti-feminist venom. Then after being spurned by every officer in the room, she runs headlong into a trap. Between the sexist banter men are manly: fighting and rescuing, meanwhile beautiful women pick clothes off the floor and stuff them into designer handbags.

While wrestling with an alien woman Commander Halstead shouts out, “Watch out for those gadgets on their chests!” I’m sure it’s all a metaphore for something.

Design for Dreaming (1956)

A woman dreams she gets an invitation from a mysterious man (dressed like Tuxedo Mask from Sailor Moon) to attend MOTORAMA, General Motors’ traveling roadshow of all things modern. Future cars with rocket styling. Future kitchens with a dome oven and rotating refridgerator. Architecture straight out of The Jetsons. Did I mention this is a musical? After sitting in the show cars she dances a latin solo on a futuristic stage, then Tuxedo Mask returns to whisk her into tomorrow in his gold rocket car, the 1956 Firebird designed by Harley Earl! Scenes of a future metropolis are glimpsed as they reach the end of the runway…. * Sigh.* A perfect film.

Design for Dreaming is a must-see and a free download from the Prellinger Archive.

These are photos of the Manhattan skyline I used in the NYC Skyline installation. I’ve uploaded a set of 40+ photos that you can download and use as a desktop or screensaver, but there is one catch: the photos are 1500×1125 but are scaled for anamorphic 16:9 video. If you want to see the true 16:9 aspect resize the photos to 1500×844 or 2000×1125.

Installation created on site for NME Magazine launch at CMJ. The promoter wanted to represent New York with skyline views and use color washes that echoed the red/gold color scheme of the venue, a banquet hall in Chinatown. Slow moving projections were thrown onto the two walls at either end of the stage which served as the DJ booth and a VIP lounge for the bands. Rather than remove the existing plasma screens they were incorporated into the installation and fed a kinetic mix of NYC landmarks.
